Genetics question – revertent

Crick, Brenner, and colleagues conducted experiments in 1961 using mutants in the rII locus of the T4 phage. They were able to show that certain mutations could be reversed if they ?rst consisted of an insertion and then a deletion (or ?rst a deletion and then an aIDition). Explain why-in their experiments-that the “revertent” phenotypes really did not look exactly like the wild types
